SOLSC Day 9: Not Yet Spring

Photo of buds against the sky

I know it’s not yet spring,
That there is still snow to come
And visions of iced-over windshields
Await my weekday mornings.

I know it’s not yet time
To put away winter coats,
To feel comfortable removing
The ice scraper from my car.

But I know to take warm days
And treat them as they are:
The gifts to which I am properly entitled
(As a true midwesterner should).

Photo of crocuses
Hello, crocuses. I’ll be seeing you soon!

Photo of greenery
Out of winter’s pall come harbingers of spring…

Photo of buttercups
Buttercups! This lawn is COVERED with them. Oh, my heart.

Photo of moss
That moss. It’s a singular green.

Photo of dogs walking
Of course the girls need to get in on the fun.

  1. If you’re location is anything like mine, I know why you feel entitled to these gifts. Surviving this winter feels like an accomplishment.

    1. Yes. It. DOES. I wasn’t as upset about the weather turning colder this year – usually I just dread it in my bones. I WILL say that it gets harder and harder to stomach the swings back to winter temps after we’ve had a taste of more temperate weather.

      1. I just remind myself that these early spring cold swings won’t be nearly as long as what we’ve endured earlier this winter.

  2. I love seeing your early signs of spring. You have some good teasers there, but you also know winter isn’t finished with you yet. It’s a stark difference to a central Texas spring where one day everything just pops our without any signals. Poof! In your face. Sometimes it feels like we get cheated, lol! Enjoy your warm days.

    1. Alice, I remember when I lived in Virginia, and spring would do the same thing. Boom! Spring! I have distinct memories of wearing sandals in April. And maybe I’m a little jealous of you, the way spring erupts and bursts forth.

  3. Love the poetry of words and visuals. Spring is sneaking its way back into our world. Thank you for sharing this glimpse of spring where you are.
