Slice of Life Day 21: Coming Together

A collage of squirrels looking at a tree

It wasn’t expressly planned, but it was a very happy coincidence that the days before spring break turned out to be the days my fourth graders and I constructed the artwork for our Leo Leonni anthology. We’re still a work in progress (I mean, aren’t we all?) but I thought I’d share the latest.

A brief sampling:

A lion and a turtle at the race track:

A ladybug and a caterpillar, communing on a leaf:

The inner workings of mouse tunnels:

And my contribution to the mix: the squirrel family:

Next week is spring break, so these projects are on hold. We’ll finish up during the first week of April, which coincides right with the start of standardized test season. It strikes me as a soft landing for us all, which this world could use more of.

Thanks, as always, for the Two Writing Teachers March Slice of Life Story Challenge. Check ’em out!

  1. The art!! Oh my goodness! So so sweet. I’d frame those and re-do a room with them as the centerpiece. 🖼️They’re joyful.

    1. Thanks, Stephanie! the art will definitely go on display in the hallways at school – but I agree. Some of this art is definitely frame-worthy.

    1. They sure can! And the artist will be crafting some mice to “live” there too. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

    1. Thank you! And yes – I love seeing how charming it’s all turning out to be. A reminder of how much I LOVE my students…

  2. Oh my gosh the squirrels are SO good!!! Reminds me of Eric Carle – very hungry caterpillar-esque.

    1. Exactly! Leo Lionni and Eric Carle were very much of the same ilk. I often use Leonni’s books as a bridge between our study of visual art / craft and writing art/craft. =)

  3. This one too I love. Kids art always gets me and I love Leo Lionni books. The squirrels are just so good … and the mouse tunnels. You have something to look forward to after spring break!

    1. Yes, we do! I can’t wait to keep working, and I can’t wait until we’ve got a finished product!
