Slice of Life Day 4: Spring Peepers!

You could say I’ve been preoccupied lately. Still, one thing that connects and reconnects me with the natural world, is the watch for signs of spring each year. Crocuses and newly-green shoots stop me in my tracks, green shoots call to me from barely-thawed ground, and the smell of rain in the air brings me hope. Today, I chanced to hear one of my favorite sounds on my afternoon commute.

There,
at the
red stoplight,
driver’s window
cracked to let in air,

I
picked up
a sound, strange
at first because
it has been a year

Spring
peepers,
signature-
croaking their call
to me: remember!

Look
at the
sky! Listen
to the world! Please.
Keep Wonder close.

  1. Signs of spring are all around here. Our pussy will is in bloom. The daffodils are up. T/here are buds on the trees. Haven’t heard the peepers yet.

  2. When in the tail end of winter doldrums, those first real sign of spring is wonderful. You’ve capture that “yes, it’s almost spring” elan beautifully. And in an arun poetry form to boot! Go you!

    1. Yes, an arun! Can’t imagine where I learned that one ; )

And living where I do, none of the signs of spring are real…we’ve had snow through May Day before. My ice scraper lives in my car ’til I see lilacs!

  3. Oh, I love the peepers! They have not started up here yet, but the daffodils are opening, and seeing the spreads of yellow and white and orange everywhere brighten up my spring every year! Watching for those ephemeral signs of spring are my favorite way of “keep(ing) Wonder close.” Thank you for the poem!

    1. I haven’t found any daffodils yet, but maybe that just means I need to walk longer and more often…

  4. Hey, you wrote an arun! (Thanks, Raivenne, for telling me!) I love that the form is out there now, doing it’s own thing. And I really love this one. It’s full of such gentle energy!

    Look
    at the
    sky! Listen
    to the world! Please.
    Keep Wonder close.

    I love it!

    1. Thanks! I’m grateful to both you and Raivenne for all of the inspiration you’ve offered. I learn so much from y’all, and I envy your talent and your fearlessness when it comes to writing in new forms.

  5. green shoots call to me from barely-thawed ground, and the smell of rain in the air brings me hope

Something about Spring that spurs optimism. This writing, like Spring, is lively, hopeful, and vibrant!

    1. Thank you! I’m glad the poem captures some of the optimism I feel in my search for signs of spring. That’s what I was going for!
