Slice of Life Day 27: The Days are Numbered

(a triple-nonet for a triple-nonet type of day)

Today seems like it’s the perfect time
to play with nines and their nine-ness:
perfect groups of threes, bundled
in three more groups besides:
three by three by three
two and seven
tidily
summed up
there.

Maybe it’s because I love numbers
just as much as I cherish my words
that I sit and ponder the
poetry of the nines,
their looping back on
one another
all back to
number
nine,

that I see number twenty-seven
and my mind begins to deconstruct
one number, then two, then three
(it’s all about the threes)
calculating awe,
counting wonder,
in every
magic
sum.

  1. I love nonets, and I love your nonets about numbers. Your ending makes me want to think more about numbers.

    1. Thanks! Honestly? I think about numbers all the time. I dig patterns and counting, and the way numbers weave together. There’s poetry in it for me…

  2. Lainie, your brain is magical. There’s no other word for it. Just like nine itself…I remember being embarrassingly old before I knew the “magic nines” trick, which awed me. It is, accordingly, one of my favorite numbers. The nonets flow like a charm and I am reminded, again, that the universe and everything in it are made of numbers. Poetry lifts the curtain a bit and says, Don’t you see?
